Toll increase possible to fund safety improvements on Lake Pontchartrain Causeway

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Commission Chairman Michael Lorino Jr. said Wednesday (June 18) he would support a toll increase if necessary to raise the money to make expensive safety improvements on the bridge. Lorino raised the possibility of a toll hike at the commission’s monthly meeting after hearing an update on the ongoing study on raising the bridge retaining walls to prevent vehicles from plunging into the lake.

‘Angels guarding me that day,’ Causeway bridge crash survivor tells Fox 8

The driver of a truck that flew over the railing of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway on May 31 told a television reporter that thoughts of his young daughter gave him the strength to survive until a good Samaritan who jumped into the water arrived to help keep him afloat. Cristian Pate told Fox 8 WVUE that the crash on the rain-slick bridge unfolded like a bad dream.

Causeway eyes re-designed guardrails to prevent overboard crashes

MANDEVILLE, La. — The southbound span of the Causeway Bridge is set to turn 58 this year. Those that maintain it know a lot has changed in the way of travel in that time.

‘When the bridge was designed, the prevalence of cars were all big, Detroit-iron, low center of gravity, and the late ’80s, early ’90s started seeing a switch to SUV’s and more personal trucks,’ said Carlton Dufrechou, the Greater New Orleans Expressway Commission executive director.
