Construction work on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway should resume next week after it was halted following a wreck Monday that killed construction worker Edward Burton of New Orleans.
Isn’t it far past time for the Causeway Commission to lower the speed limit for trucks traveling on the bridge? There is no way these large trucks can stop nearly as fast as cars in an emergency situation.
NEW ORLEANS —A person’s body was recovered Monday night after an afternoon crash shut down the south lanes of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The incident happened just before 3:30 p.m. Monday 4 miles south of Mandeville near mile marker 20. Causeway authorities said two vehicles were involved in the crash. A vehicle went into the water, officials said. Two people fell into the water. One person was rescued.

Causeway officials said the 18-wheeler crash Thursday was another serious example of why the bridge needs updating. The truck dangled dangerously off the side of the bridge after, Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou said, the driver lost control.
NEW ORLEANS —After two hours of being shut down Thursday, the southbound lanes were reopened on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The southbound lanes were closed temporarily due to an accident on the bridge.
