MANDEVILLE, La. (WGNO) – The agency that regulates the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway voted tonight to raise the tolls on the bridge after heated opposition from residents who will be impacted by the increase.

After hearing citizens’ objections for more than an hour, the Causeway Commission voted Wednesday night (Aug. 10) to raise tolls and spend $103 million to beef up railings on the southbound bridge and add sections of shoulder to both spans. Commissioners Shelby LaSalle Jr., Joseph Jaeger Jr. and Stephen Romig voted in favor of the project at a well-attended, and at times testy, meeting in the St. Tammany Parish Council chamber north of Mandeville.

Causeway motorist rescued after pickup plunges into lake
The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway’s southbound span re-opened Monday (Aug. 8) just before 10 a.m., following a wreck that sent a truck crashing into the water about 8:15 a.m. The northbound bridge re-opened at about 9 a.m.
