The driver of a garbage truck was booked with negligent homicide and other charges Thursday (Nov. 13) in connection with last week’s fatal accident on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, authorities said. Darrell Benjamin, the operator of the BFI truck, also was booked with negligent injuring and reckless driving in the Nov. 3 accident that killed a construction worker on the bridge, Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou said.

Vehicle accident shuts down southbound Causeway Bridge
NEW ORLEANS —A person’s body was recovered Monday night after an afternoon crash shut down the south lanes of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The incident happened just before 3:30 p.m. Monday 4 miles south of Mandeville near mile marker 20. Causeway authorities said two vehicles were involved in the crash. A vehicle went into the water, officials said. Two people fell into the water. One person was rescued.
