NEW ORLEANS —After two hours of being shut down Thursday, the southbound lanes were reopened on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The southbound lanes were closed temporarily due to an accident on the bridge.
UPDATE: The southbound lanes on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway are now open following a crash around noon today.
The southbound lanes of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway are closed due to a wreck involving an 18-wheeler, according to Bridge General Manager Carlton Dufrechou.
The bridge is expected to be closed for at least two hours.
A routine night on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway turned dramatic early Tuesday (Oct. 7) when a motorist ran into the side of the bridge, got out of his car and jumped off the southbound span. After initially grabbing a life ring that was tossed to him, the man inexplicably let go, forcing Causeway Police Cpl. Tate Gallo to go into the lake to rescue the man, authorities said.
