Lacombe man lucky to survive accident on Causeway, official says

A Lacombe man is lucky to be alive after losing control of his motorcycle Thursday (May 7) and being badly injured on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, a bridge official said. Caleb G. Batiste, 19, who underwent surgery Thursday night, suffered broken legs, a severely damaged arm and other injuries in the 6:15 p.m. crash on the southbound span, bridge General Manager Carlton Dufrechou said.

Crash test video — Pickup puts Causeway rail design to the test

A full-size pickup was rammed into a guardrail in Texas on Tuesday (May 5) as testing of enhanced guardrail designs for the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway continued at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. A video shows the red truck’s right front slamming into a double steel railing, sending vehicle parts and bits of concrete flying in a cloud of dust before the pickup bounces back onto the simulated roadway.
