The driver of a garbage truck was booked with negligent homicide and other charges Thursday (Nov. 13) in connection with last week’s fatal accident on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, authorities said. Darrell Benjamin, the operator of the BFI truck, also was booked with negligent injuring and reckless driving in the Nov. 3 accident that killed a construction worker on the bridge, Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou said.
Construction work on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway should resume next week after it was halted following a wreck Monday that killed construction worker Edward Burton of New Orleans.
Isn’t it far past time for the Causeway Commission to lower the speed limit for trucks traveling on the bridge? There is no way these large trucks can stop nearly as fast as cars in an emergency situation.
